Protein Power – Dinners

Most people already know that resistance training is important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. However, some folks don’t realize that what they eat is even more important for your fitness plan since, without the right macronutrients, you’re just wasting your time when you work out.

Protein plays an essential role as a macronutrient in that it helps to rebuild the muscle tissues that you break down every time you work out. Protein also plays a critical role in promoting your body’s immune defense, metabolism, energy levels, and fluid balance.

We’ve come up with some high protein dinner options (each with at least 20 grams of protein) that can help you hit that protein sweet spot—they not only help you reach your health goals,  but they’re also straight-up delicious.

Flank Steak with a Brown Sugar Rub

Ahhhh…there’s nothing like a good steak to fill you up. There are many ways that you can cook steak; whether grilling, pan-frying, or cooking in a wok, you have many options with steaks.

And one of the best things about this pure protein dinner option is that it can be served up with just about anything. The next time you prepare a nice cut of flank steak, try coating it in a rub of brown sugar, ancho chili powder, cinnamon, and smoked paprika.

Average protein per serving: 30 grams.

One thing that we always recommend with chicken is to go organic and/or all-natural, and free-range whenever possible. They may cost a little more, but the flavor and texture will more than make up for it.

Another benefit of purchasing chicken, in general, is that it’s one of the least expensive sources of animal protein available at local supermarkets. Drumsticks are even cheaper than the other parts of the chicken and they taste delicious.

Average protein per serving (one drumstick): 12.5 grams x 2 = 25 grams.

Grilled Salmon Steak

Salmon is another extremely versatile food. It can be broiled, baked, pan-seared, steamed, and of course, served raw as sushi (called Sake, not to be confused with the famous Japanese spirit).

One of the best ways that I personally like to cook salmon is by grilling it over coals. The result is a super-tasty combination of the natural taste and texture of the fish along with that great smoky enhancement. And don’t forget to baste it first with a tasty marinade!

Average protein per serving: 22 - 23 grams.

Lean Turkey Burger

A fantastic alternative to beef (and often less pricey) is lean turkey meat. If you visit your local butcher, they’ll usually grind it there on the spot for you so that you can make some tasty turkey burgers.

Like other lean meats, turkey can sometimes make for a dry burger without much in the way of taste. There’s a solution to that problem—adding grated vegetables such as zucchini, mushrooms, and sweet onions into your burger mix. This method of preparation adds the moisture of the veggies to your turkey meat, resulting in one succulent, high protein burger option.

Average protein per serving: 25 grams.
