Overlooked Muscles - Deltoids

Many people who work out, even athletes, know that working out on many of the smaller muscle groups is what separates being merely good, to being great. They also know that those who make commitments in the form of time, energy, and effort, will eventually be richly rewarded.

You don’t have to be a professional powerlifter or bodybuilder to be able to pay attention to details and focus on your body’s smaller muscle groups. No, they might not seem as exciting as those larger “beach muscle” groups such as ripped arms and bulging chests.

But it also means that working on these more minute areas isn’t as intense since you don’t have to do the big compound exercises like deadlifts, squats, and bench presses.

One of these oft-overlooked, smaller muscle groups is the deltoids—your shoulder muscles. While nice arms and pectoral (chest) muscles are all fine and dandy, rocking a nice pair of toned shoulders is also pretty easy on the eyes.

Here are a few shoulder exercises that you can perform anywhere, such as at home or outside; all you need is a pair of dumbbells.

Front Shoulder Dumbbell Raises

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold two dumbbells at your sides.

Your palms of your hands should be facing backward with your knuckles facing forwards.

Hold the dumbbells around 2 inches out from your body. This is the starting position for the exercise.

Tighten your core, eyes facing forward with your arms straight.

Gradually raise the left dumbbell up to collarbone height. Pause when you reach the top and then slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position.

Repeat for a total of 10 reps and then repeat with your right arm.

Working on one arm at a time prevents you from swinging your body back in forth so that you can isolate each arm.

Lateral Shoulder Dumbbell Raises

Grab two dumbbells and stand up straight with your feet and knees together.

Hold the dumbbells at your sides with palms facing in.

Hold the dumbbells 4 inches out from your body. This is the starting position for the exercise.

Keep your body still and concentrate your eyes on looking forward.

With your arms slightly bent at the elbows, slowly raise the left and right dumbbells up to around shoulder height.

Pause for a second and then slowly lower the dumbbells back to their starting positions.

Repeat for a total of 10 reps.

 

Rear Shoulder Dumbbell Raises



Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold two dumbbells at your sides. Your palms of your hands should be facing inwards toward your hips.

Hold the dumbbells around 2 inches out from your body. This is the starting position for the exercise. 

Pivot at your hips and lean forward at about a 45-degree angle. Tighten your core, eyes facing forward with head up and shoulders back. Gradually raise the dumbbells up to about shoulder height.

Pause when you reach the top and then slowly lower the dumbbells back to their starting positions.

Repeat for a total of 10 reps and then repeat with your right arm. Working on one arm at a time prevents you from swinging your body back in forth so that you can isolate each arm.
