Sharpen Your Focus for Better Workouts

As men, we usually assume that the only way to grow lean body mass (muscle) is through lifting heavy weights, spending long periods of time in the gym, and switching up our workouts so that our bodies have to adapt to different stimuli. While these are all legitimate methods for making gains, what if there was another, simpler way for you to make your muscles grow faster?

I know what you’re thinking…will you have to shell out a bunch of cash in order to buy some pricey exercise equipment? Nope. Will you have to totally overhaul your workout routine? Negative. In fact, all you’ll have to do is mentally shift the way you focus when you’re working out—and watch as your muscles miraculously get bigger.

Attentional focus

In 2009, a group of American researchers conducted a revolutionary experiment [i]. They took a group of people who had never touched weights before and had them perform lat pulldowns. During each rep, the researchers utilized electrodes in order to measure each of their participant’s muscle activity. They were curious as to whether it was possible to force their lat muscles to work harder with a shift in what they called “attentional focus.”

So what is attentional focus, exactly? Attentional focus is simply what your mind thinks about during a particular activity or movement. There are two primary types of attentional focus: Internal and external. Internal focus is your ability to actively concentrate on the exact target muscle that you’re working out. External focus involves directing your attention outside of your body.

For instance, let’s say you’re performing chest presses on a flat bench. During the chest muscle contraction phase of the exercise, when you’re pumping the weight up and away from your body, an internal focus would be for you to concentrate and actively squeeze your chest while lifting the weight up. An external focus would be to concentrate on driving the weight away from the bench.”

Now that may not sound all that impressive, does it? Fortunately, science shows that it is. After the researchers told the subjects to pull with their backs, instead of their arms, and in doing so, adducting the scapulae and concentrating on the tension in the back musculature, they discovered that their subject’s muscular activity was boosted by nearly 20 percent!

In other words, by simply shifting into attentional focus mode, you can achieve a marked increase in your body’s muscular activity. Furthermore, this shift in focus can result in your muscles growing faster than normal.

If that isn’t impressive enough, there’s yet another benefit to gain by concentrating on your attentional focus. When you focus on contracting your muscles that you’re working on, rather than simply lifting the weight, you’ll typically find that doing so requires the usage of lighter weights. Lifting lighter weights means that there’s a lot less stress on your body’s joints, and hence, less potential to sustain injuries.

To clarify—utilizing your attentional focus means that you’re doing a lot more than simply using good form. Yes, getting your weight lifting techniques down are indeed an important first step, but it’s not enough. Increasing and maintaining your attentional focus requires concentration and discipline, which are great attributes to develop.
